RE: time by car - williams az to grand canyon

That's what we did when we were there this past summer. Once at the Grand Canyon, we parked at the general store and rode the shuttle busses from there. Plenty of parking there and the busses make it easy to get around.

RE: bunk slipping

Thus, the person driving the deck screws into the walls can only estimate the precise location of the aluminum frame he should be aiming for. I'll bet dollars to donuts that your installer missed the aluminum stud. The Rockwood Ultralights don't have much for aluminum framing. The ones I saw at the factory just had framing around the perimeter and around the door and maybe 1 or 2 vertical studs, depending on the length of the TT. Where the walls meet the roof and floor, the aluminum frame has a wood core so the screws have something to bite into, because the aluminum is pretty thin. So, I doubt that the bunks are secured to any studs.

RE: Let me tell y'all how fast paint dries!

At least it was only paint. A couple of years ago, I was behind a PU carrying a load of crushed rock. He hit a bump and his tailgate dropped down spilling rocks right in front of me. I was immediately on the brakes hard and pulled some evasive maneuvers. Fortunately, only a cracked turn signal lens.

RE: Arizona - Oak Creek Canyon - Sedona - Jerome - Prescot.

Did part of that route this past summer. 89A descending into Oak Creek Canyon from Flagstaff is tight and winding. I think there is a length restriction, but I don't remember what it is.

RE: Disaster Averted!!! Check them knobs!!!

We had something similar happen this past summer. We had been on the road for about 2 hrs when our youngest daughter declared she need to go to the bathroom. Since we were in the middle of nowhere, we pulled off the road and let her use the facilities in the TT. When I opened the door, I could smell the gas. After looking around a bit, I found one of the stove knobs turned on slightly. If we hadn't stopped, it would have been another 4-5 hrs before we would have discovered the problem. I was suprised, however, that the propane detector hadn't gone off.

RE: yellowstone or grand canyon for first out west trip

We did all those this past July. I would vote for the Rushmore/Yellowstone/ Tetons route.

RE: how to plan an out west trip

We completed a similar trip this past summer. Starting from NY, we took a total of 31 days for our trip. Even so, it was still pretty much a whirlwind tour. Did the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Yellowstone, Tetons, Devil's Tower, Rushmore, and the Badlands. When we originally started planning, we were trying to do it in 21 days. It just didn't work without driving 500+ miles on travel days. We had 4 days of slack in our trip just to have a day off every week or to cover any problems that could pop up while travelling. We had reservations at campgrounds near/in any national park. At the other campgrounds we didn't. We only had to go to our 2nd choice once. The problem with heading west from the east coast is the 6-8 days you spend just getting there and back. That just eats up so much of your time (and $$$). There a lots of good planning suggestions in other posts. The good thing is that you have almost 2 years to plan for it. Good luck and have fun!

RE: Anyone tow with Nissan Titan CC

I tow the TT in my signature with an 08 Titan CC longbed. We took an 8000 mile trip out west this past summer. No problems what so ever. A very capable and comfortable 1/2 ton truck.

RE: Badlands Trip

We recently did everything on your itinerary, except Sturgis and Deadwood, in 3 days. Now, having been to the area, I could see how you could easily spend 7-10 days there. If you have the time, stay longer. If not, enjoy what you can.

RE: Best place to buy Eternabond

not sure if it's the best place... click here I bought mine from Big Rock Supply as well. It was the cheapest delivered price that I could find. Delivery was fairly quick as well.

RE: Oklahoma City Campground

We stayed at Twin Fountains on our recent trip west. Very nice and easy access to most sights in OKC. My only complaint was lack of cable TV. A little out of the way if your coming across I-40 though.

RE: Gas price jUMP!

Just (10 min ago) paid $3.61 here in central NY. Some stations have jumped 10-15 cents today to the $3.70ish range. This should keep us running for 2-3 weeks if we have to.

RE: Truck cap - Rear Window Wiper

The ARE Z-Series cap I had on my old truck had a wiper option. It already had a hole on the glass for it. But, that was back in 2002. Things might have changed between now and then.

RE: Broken Stove Vent Flap

Ours broke recently as well. It was securely closed when it broke. I might try the metal rod approach and some epoxy to hold it to the plastic flap. Given that it appears to be a common failure item, it probably doesn't make sense to bother replacing it with the same type.

RE: Minivan question re: Freestar

The advantage of the Freestar was the 4.2L V-6 produced 265 ft-lbs of torque. Great for towing. The downside is that Freestars are notorious for shredding torque converters. Been there, done that.Interesting, I keep my ear pretty tuned to the automotive industry even though I don't turn a wrench for a living anymore. This is the first comment I've heard of this problem. A quick check of the internet does not confirm your statement. Freestar reliability ratings A lot of people STILL confuse the Freestar with the earlier generation Windstars, which DID have transmission problems. Those vans had a different transmission, yanked from the Taurus, that was undersized for minivan duty from the beginning. Windstar reliability rating The transmission in the Freestar is a descendent of the transmission in the Windstar. The transmission reliability is much better, but the torque converters have problems. Check out the Freestar forum on Edmunds. A lot of reports of failed torque converters. Granted, this isn't a scientific sampling. But that many failures of the same component is suspicious.

RE: Zion to Bryce avoiding the tunnel

We drove UT-14 out of Cedar City 3 times (all without the TT) on our recent trip. The first 8-10 miles eastbound is 4%-8%. It's a little winding, but having done it, I wouldn't worry too much about taking the TT over it. The shoulders are decent and there aren't any real sharp turns. On the eastbound portion, there is a passing zone about halfway up. Once you're up top, the road is pretty easy going. One time we followed a large DP MH. He had no trouble maintaining a decent speed. From Cedar City, you gain about 4000 ft in altitude. The change in scenery is impressive. Be on the lookout for the lava fields. Cedar Breaks is also worth a stop.

RE: New Truck Break-In

I had about 5K miles on my TV before the first tow. I also had the "don't exceed 50 MPH for the first 500 towing miles". For the first 200 miles, I kept it to about 60 MPH. For the next 300+ I kept it to about 65 MPH. There's no way I would drive down the interstate at 50 MPH when the prevailing traffic is doing 70-75 MPH. I also changed the diff fluid after my first tow.
